From AGI to Alignment: The AI Buzzwords That Actually Matter
AI headlines are full of dramatic language. Terms that once belonged in sci-fi novels now appear in CEO interviews, researcher resignations, and safety debates. Here’s a clear guide to the most important ones.
AGI (Artificial General Intelligence)
An AI system that can learn, reason, and perform any intellectual task a human can, across a wide range of domains. Current models excel at specific skills but still fail at things a child finds easy. There is no agreed test for when AGI has been reached. Recent claims that “AGI has arrived” remain disputed.
Superintelligence (or ASI – Artificial Superintelligence)
An AI that surpasses the best human experts in virtually every field. It would outperform humans not just in narrow tasks but in general reasoning, strategy, and scientific discovery. Timelines remain highly uncertain.
Recursive Self-Improvement
When an AI system can improve its own design, training, or code, creating a smarter version of itself. This could lead to rapid, compounding gains in capability. Companies are already beginning to hand parts of AI development over to AI systems.

Interpretability (or Explainability)
The ability to understand why an AI system made a particular decision or developed certain internal goals. Most experts say current tools are still too weak for highly capable models.
Takeoff
How quickly AI capabilities could jump once systems start improving themselves. “Fast” or “hard” takeoff refers to a sudden, hard-to-control leap; “slow” takeoff would give society more time to adapt.
These concepts sit at the center of today’s debates about AI safety. As systems grow more capable, the gap between what they can do and what we can reliably control continues to widen.
