Anthropic’s IPO Faces New Challenges as Big Tech’s AI Spending Raises Investor Concerns

Anthropic’s planned stock market debut is facing growing uncertainty as concerns mount over the cost, financing and long-term profitability of artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure. The company unveiled its IPO prospectus at a difficult moment, just days before disappointing financial signals from major technology companies intensified investor concerns about the sustainability of the AI boom.

Microsoft, Google and Amazon, three of Anthropic’s key partners and investors, recently reported quarterly results highlighting the enormous financial demands of expanding AI infrastructure. Although demand for cloud computing remains strong, rising capital expenditure and weakening cash flow have raised questions about whether the industry can maintain its current pace of investment.

Anthropic’s IPO prospectus, released in October, revealed a net loss of $80 billion for the first half of the year, alongside hundreds of billions of dollars in computing commitments. The document also contained more than 90 pages of risk disclosures. Investors are now awaiting the company’s third-quarter financial results, which could provide a clearer picture of its financial position and growth prospects.

You study your charts. You wait for the right setup. You follow your trading rules. And STILL… the market refuses to cooperate. Here's what most traders miss: The biggest moves may have already happened BEFORE you sit down to trade. By 9:30 AM, you could be chasing a move that's already over.

But options trading just changed. Certain major ETFs and stocks now have options trading starting at 7:30 AM Eastern. Coach Mike at NetPicks has developed new trade plans specifically for this window. He explains how to spot opportunities, manage risk, and avoid mistakes that can cost you money.

The pressure extends beyond Anthropic. Specialist cloud infrastructure providers, known as neoclouds, including CoreWeave and Nebius, are facing higher borrowing costs and difficulties securing financing for their ambitious data centre expansion plans. Anthropic relies on these providers for part of its computing capacity, alongside major partners Amazon, Google and SpaceX.

This dependence creates an important challenge: Anthropic needs increasingly large amounts of computing power to develop and operate its AI models, but securing that capacity depends on suppliers being able to finance expensive infrastructure projects.

Big Tech’s AI investment bill

Recent earnings reports from Microsoft, Alphabet and Amazon have brought the financial consequences of the AI infrastructure race into sharper focus.

Microsoft reduced its capital expenditure forecast for the year from $175 billion to $170 billion. Alphabet maintained its guidance of up to $205 billion, while Amazon reiterated its expected spending of approximately $220 billion.

More concerning for investors is the impact of this spending on cash flow. Amazon reported negative free cash flow for a second consecutive quarter, with a trailing 12-month outflow of $42.4 billion. Alphabet also reported negative free cash flow of $9.1 billion, contributing to a nearly 13% decline in its shares in one trading session.

Microsoft remained cash-flow positive, generating $18.6 billion, although this represented a significant decline for the second consecutive quarter. The company also announced plans to raise $25 billion through bond issuance to help fund its infrastructure expansion.

These developments have raised concerns that even the world's largest technology companies may struggle to finance their AI ambitions entirely through their existing cash generation.

Strong demand offers some reassurance

Despite the financial pressures, there are reasons for optimism. Microsoft, Google and Amazon all reported cloud revenue growth above analysts’ expectations, demonstrating that demand for computing services remains robust. Google’s cloud business more than doubled its revenue compared with the previous year.

Oracle has also attempted to reassure investors by outlining plans to limit additional fundraising to $20 billion in the coming years and achieve positive cash flow in the second half of its next financial year.

For Anthropic, continued growth in demand for AI services is a significant advantage. Analyst Daniel Newman highlighted figures in its prospectus showing annual sales growth of 1,300%, net revenue retention of 900% and an implied gross margin of 85%. These figures suggest substantial commercial momentum, although investors will still need evidence that growth can translate into sustainable profitability.

A critical test for the IPO market

Anthropic’s proposed IPO comes as the wider technology listing market faces difficulties. Several companies, including Oura, Firmus and Solidigm, have postponed or abandoned their plans to go public. Other infrastructure companies have also delayed updating their IPO documentation.

The Nasdaq Composite recently recorded its first three-week losing streak since March, while semiconductor stocks came under pressure following disappointing guidance from Intel.

Anthropic may therefore become an important test of investor appetite for high-growth AI companies. Its technology, rapid revenue expansion and strategic partnerships could attract significant interest, but its enormous computing commitments and financial losses present substantial risks.

Ultimately, investors must decide whether Anthropic represents a rare long-term growth opportunity or whether the costs of competing in the AI industry will prove too high. Its IPO could help determine how the market values the next generation of AI businesses.
