How Young Workers Are Landing Six-Figure AI Jobs—and How You Can Position Yourself for One

While many Gen Z and millennial workers face a tough overall job market, a growing subset is thriving in high-paying artificial intelligence roles. A LinkedIn study released this week shows that younger professionals are capturing a disproportionate share of fast-growing AI engineering and technology-building positions, often at salaries well above the broader workforce average.

The broader labor market remains challenging for early-career talent. Unemployment stood at 7.2% for workers ages 22 to 27 and 5.7% for recent college graduates in the same age group as of June, compared with 4.1% for all workers. Yet in AI-specific roles, the picture looks markedly different.

Gen Z workers account for more than two-thirds of new hires in two highly sought individual-contributor positions: forward deployed engineer (median pay $199,000) and AI engineer ($166,000). Millennials make up 60% of new hires for head-of-AI roles, which carry a median salary of $236,000.

If you’ve ever watched a breakout look perfect, only to fail right after you got in, this is worth reading.  The Apex Breakout Trendline Indicator is built to help you spot when breakout pressure is actually building, filter out weaker moves, and map your entry, stop loss, and target right on the chart.

It works on TradingView and NinjaTrader, uses a rules-based approach instead of guesswork, and comes with a one-time price plus a 30-day money-back guarantee.

If you want a clearer way to evaluate breakouts - without cluttering up your chart - this is the kind of tool you should know about.

AI job postings on LinkedIn rose 14% between 2023 and 2024, then surged 156% between 2024 and 2025. The typical AI role now offers a median salary of $177,000—more than double the $80,000 median for non-AI positions.

By comparison, the overall median annual salary for workers aged 25–34 was $60,320 in the second quarter of 2026. Companies are pouring capital into AI and raising compensation to attract scarce talent. Most of these roles also demand higher education: 91% of AI workers hold at least a bachelor’s degree, and nearly half of those hired into head-of-AI positions have a graduate degree, with 20% holding doctorates.

One clear gap remains: women are significantly underrepresented. Only 26% of new AI hires in 2025 were women, versus 50% in non-AI occupations. Representation drops further at senior levels—women account for just one-fifth of head-of-AI hires and 18% of member-of-technical-staff roles. The sole AI occupation where women are hired at parity is data annotator, the lowest-paid role on the list at a median $51,000.

For students and early-career professionals who want to enter this market, several practical steps stand out.

  • First, pursue a computer science degree or closely related technical major. Despite elevated unemployment among recent computer science graduates in recent years, the major is still projected to command the highest starting salary among the class of 2026 at roughly $81,500. A strong theoretical foundation remains the most reliable entry ticket.

  • Second, build real experience working with data. Employers want candidates who can prepare, clean, and apply data effectively, not just discuss concepts. If formal work experience is limited, create tangible side projects—open-source contributions, personal AI tools, or small deployed models—and document them clearly in a portfolio. These projects demonstrate both technical skill and genuine interest.

  • Third, target roles that match your current level while remaining open to rapid progression. Entry-level AI engineering positions can lead relatively quickly to higher-responsibility and higher-pay opportunities as the field expands. Continuously update skills in areas such as machine learning frameworks, data pipelines, and emerging AI infrastructure.

Not every young worker views AI as pure opportunity. Some see career upside; others worry about long-term displacement. The LinkedIn data suggests that those who actively develop relevant skills are currently capturing outsized rewards. The window is open, but competition and educational requirements are high. Focused preparation—technical education, hands-on data experience, and visible projects—remains the most direct path into these high-paying roles.
